PIIC has begun to design and implement a program of study for mentors, coaches and school leaders. The program of study will include offerings statewide and regionally. The range of offerings are amended continually in accord with participant needs. Initially, participants are drawn from selected IUs, and will expand to a larger base as programs are evaluated and revised after the early versions are completed.

Program of Study

  • Understanding the roles of an IU instructional mentor
  • Identifying the foundations of instructional coaching including: B,D,A cycle of coaching, learning walks, study groups, PLCs, and modeling
  • Developing communications and facilitation skills for mentors and coaches
  • Coaching and mentoring for 21st century skills
  • Gaining access: mentors and coaches in schools and classrooms
  • Understanding the art and science of instructional coaching
  • Designing and managing a coaching time schedule
  • Training literacy, math, and other subject specific content coaches
  • Coaching through interdisciplinary units of study
  • Assessing instructional coaching and coaches
  • Designing effective professional development for schools and teachers
  • Using formative and summative data to guide classroom instruction
  • Collecting and analyzing school-wide data
  • Developing administrative support for instructional coaching
  • Integrating technology to support instruction
  • Understanding the PA Standards Aligned System (SAS) for improving instruction
  • Applying the resiliency approach to student learning
